Saint Peter's Basilica and The Vatican from Above

Photographed & edited by Riccardo Vincenzi. Artist's recommendation: 28" x 40" (70cm x 100cm) printed on aluminum.

The world-famous Vatican City, home of the Pope and the Catholic Clergy, is actually its own country within Rome. It is the smallest nation in the world in terms of both size and population, with a radius of approximately 3.2 kilometers and about 1000 residents. Almost everyone residing in Vatican City works for the Church. It features perhaps the very best architecture in Rome, and features one of the crown jewels of art, Michelangelo's masterwork, the Sistine Chapel in the Apostolic Palace.

Most of the activities that take place within its walls could in fact be quite boring to the general public. The mysterious aura surrounding the Archivum Secretum Apostolicum Vaticanum - this is the full name of the Vatican Archives - could, for example, only be due to an incorrect translation from the original Latin: "secretum" should not be translated as "secret", but simply means "Personal". Anyone who has ever had a desk could probably grasp what is at stake: the Vatican "Secret" Archive is a collection of personal documents, especially private letters, chronicles and historical records of the Popes of the past.
