Photographed & edited by Riccardo Vincenzi. Artist's recommendation: 28" x 40" (70cm x 100cm) printed on aluminum.

The Circus Maximus was Rome's ultimate entertainment venue - the grand host to the famous chariot races, as well as gladiator fights, public events, and sometimes even executions.. It is likely that it held five times as many viewers as the Colosseum; historians believe that up to 250,000 people could watch races in the Circus Maximus.

The venue was constructed in the Valley of Murcia, between the Aventine and Palantine hills, likely laid out by some of the very first Roman Kings in the 6th century BC. The Circus was further worked upon later by Emperor Julius Caesar, and retained its importance in Roman culture.

The vast majority of the Circus Maximus is now in ruins, and the area is converted to a beautiful public park.
