Palazzaccio & San Pietro

$89.97

Photographed & edited by Riccardo Vincenzi. Artist's recommendation: 28" x 40" (70cm x 100cm) printed on aluminum.

The large white building on the right that overlooks the Lungotevere Waterfront is the “Palazzaccio” - roughly translated to Seat of the Courts. From the perspective of Piazza dei Tribunali, in front of the Palace and overlooking the Tiber River, the grandeur of the building is crowned by the great bronze quadriga (chariot) of Ettore Ximenes, a famous Italian sculptor. Today the building houses the Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest judicial power in Italy.

Completely covered in travertine (a form of limestone favored by Roman artisans), the Palazzaccio rests on a reinforced concrete structure. Due to its being built on soft ground, it was at risk of collapse in the 1970s due to its massive and heavy bulk. During the excavation work for its foundations, various tombs and archaeological finds came to light; in particular, a beautiful ivory doll with articulated joints was found next to the remains of a young woman, Crepereia Tryphaena, which is now on display in the Central Montemartini Museum in Rome. This discovery of the young Roman woman with her doll beside her moved the Italians very much.
