Piazza di Spagna

Photographed & edited by Riccardo Vincenzi. Artist's recommendation: 28" x 40" (70cm x 100cm) printed on aluminum.

The Piazza di Spagna is composed of several stairways useful for fulfilling the necessary maintenance of public order as well as religious needs. The division of the various stairways follows has a sacred numerical symbolism: 3 stairways, each of which in turn branches off into 3 flights. The ramps then tighten in the center to form a large and single staircase that leads to the square with the obelisk.

The genius of De Sanctis' work lies in the fact that he did not create a simple staircase, but a place of passage and circulation. Another sign of his mastery is the management of the axis that connects the façade of the church of Trinità dei Monti and Via Condotti: despite the asymmetrical course, the architect managed to make the whole path harmonious and balanced.
