The Roman Forum, known simply as the Forum, was for centuries the center of the Roman Kingdom, and is often called "the most celebrated meeting place in the world." The phrase "All roads lead to Rome" probably refers to the Forum! It housed the most important government buildings, acted as the nexus of the Roman economy, and was host to important trials, debates, processions, elections and events.
The various monuments were first built for political, religious and commercial activities, then during the 2nd century BCE for for judicial activities. Towards the end of the Republican Age, the ancient Roman Forum had become insufficient to serve as the administrative and representative centre of the city, and instead was turned into a landmark.
This space was originally a swamp. The area of the Roman Forum was drained in the 6th century BC with the Cloaca Maxima, which was one of the world's first purification systems.
